Most blown hoses aren't bad luck — they're a warning nobody read. The good news: the warning signs are visible, and checking for them takes about a minute per machine. Here's the walk-around we'd teach every operator, plus routing, storage and replace-or-run advice from the trucks that get the breakdown calls.
Hydraulic hoses rarely fail without notice. Covers crack, fittings sweat, and a rub point wears a little shinier every shift — often for weeks before anything lets go. A daily walk-around catches most of it: no tools, just eyes on every hose you can see, in the same order every time.
One safety rule before anything else: look, don't feel. Never run your hand along a pressurized hose to find a leak. A pinhole can force fluid through skin — a fluid injection injury that may look minor at first but is a genuine medical emergency requiring immediate care. If you suspect a pinhole, shut the machine down and pass a piece of cardboard near the line instead of your hand. This is standard industry guidance, and it's the one part of this page worth memorizing.

A hose that fails from abrasion didn't fail because the rubber was weak — it was allowed to rub. Replacement time is the moment to fix the routing, or the new hose dies the same death on schedule.
Abrasion sleeves, spring guards and wrap are cheap insurance anywhere a hose crosses an edge, passes through a bulkhead, or bundles against other lines.
Loose hoses whip and saw against everything nearby under vibration. Proper clamps calm that down — but leave slack for the hose to change length slightly under pressure and for joints to reach full travel.
Steel always wins the rubbing contest. Re-route lines away from sharp brackets and weld beads, and where contact can't be avoided, put a sleeve or rub block between them.

You'll see all kinds of replacement intervals quoted online. We won't give you one — there isn't an honest universal number. Hose life depends on temperature, sunlight, ozone, vibration, pressure cycles, routing and the fluid itself, and manufacturer ratings vary from one hose construction to the next. Trust your machine's service manual and the hose maker's guidance, not a blanket rule from the internet.
What we can tell you is what Kern County does to rubber. Summer sun ages covers from the outside while hot oil works from the inside; hoses near engines and manifolds age fastest. On westside oilfield equipment around Taft — open sun, hot duty, year-round — covers crack years sooner than under a shed roof.
The takeaway: judge hoses by condition, not birthdays. A five-year-old hose in a cool run may be fine; a two-year-old hose baking against a manifold may be due. The walk-around is the only interval that adjusts to your conditions.
Plenty of operations keep made-up assemblies for their most failure-prone lines — smart, but only if the spare is still healthy when the day comes. Rubber ages on the shelf too:

Every walk-around eventually turns one up: a hose that isn't leaking yet but doesn't look right. The framing is simple — a scheduled swap costs a planned hour; a failure in the field costs downtime, lost fluid, cleanup, and sometimes a safety incident. When it's close, replace early.
Exposed or rusting wire reinforcement. A cover cracked deep enough to see cord or braid. Blisters, soft spots, a kink or crushed section, a visibly twisted layline. A fitting that re-wets after cleaning. Any leak, however small — leaks do not heal.
Light surface scuffing that hasn't gone through the cover, faded or chalky covers with no cracking, hoses near heat that still look sound. Note them, check them daily, and plan replacements at the next service instead of letting them pick the date.
When in doubt, replace. Unsure which side a hose is on? Text a photo to (661) 555-0148 for a straight read. And beyond depressurizing the system and containing a leak, leave high-pressure repair to someone equipped for it.
